Clevedon Pier , Avon
Clevedon pier was first opened on Easter Monday 29th
March 1869 and by the 1880s it was being used by the
paddle steamer Waverly . In 1894 the pier head pavilion
and shelters were added . It seems to have had its share
of disasters , in 1899 20ft of decking was washed away ,
in 1910 the steamer landing stage was partially wrecked ,
and 1970 saw two spans collapse during insurance weight
tests . In 1972 a preservation trust was set up and in
1985 the pier was dismantled for refurbishment . It was
reconstructed in 1986 and reopened in 1989 . A marvellous
achievement by any standards .
